"Why would it become a meaningless piece of paper if people had coitus outside of marriage?" As I said earlier the piece of paper is a visible representation for the conditions of marriage. "A long term commitment to care for one another as you care for yourselves in a state of exclusive union where by one assumes an obligation of devotion to the other.." Coitis out side of marriage typically defines a breach of what the paper represents and can in many peoples view completely nullify its value.
