>>Webfiles: China Goes West - Why Tibetans may go the way of Native Americans<<

asiaweek.com

Amusingly obvious and ham-fisted attempt to rewrite US history. We in the US now consider what was done to the Native Americans shocking and reprehensible. Glad to see that Asians and the US agree on what is happening to the Tibetans. Shocking and reprehensible.

At least Native Americans were given reservations in an attempt to make up for what was done to them. The reservations are sovereign territory for the tribe, not subject to US jurisdiction. Part of my own family is Turtle Mountain Chippewa. Tribal land straddles both the US and Canada. Citizens of the US and Canada may not enter without permission of the tribe, but within the reservation, the tribe moves across what would otherwise be the Canadian border without restriction.

If the Chinese want to pretend to themselves that they are recreating US history, some respect for the Tibetans is due - including respecting the right of Tibetans to have their own nation. But I don't think that's going to happen. I think it's just self-serving propaganda.
