Homestake is Barrick's fatted calf. " Without Homestake Barrick would hit a wall by 2004/5 unless there was a substantial increase in the gold price. With reserve rich Veladero and low cost operations included those concerns diminish and Barrick can refine its positioning ahead of any eventual recovery in the sector.
