Is the satellite industry being subject to protectionism?
$5 billion in satellites investment were supposed to be burnt down the atmosphere. Later the DoD take in under its wings under tax payers' money.

Now they still want to send some more up there!!

Lockheed Martin Wins Licenses
Lockheed Martin, Pegasus Communications, TRW, and eight other companies won licenses from the FCC to operate satellites at 34 orbit locations. According to a Reuters article, when these companies launch their satellites, they will be able offer various telecommunication, including high-speed Internet, interactive direct-to-home and digital television services, to customers in the US. Seven of the eight companies are using the licenses to offer fixed satellite services, while one, Celesat, is using the licenses to support its mobile satellite system.

What is going on here?

Isn't this industry supposed to be in the doldrums?

Are satellites being bounced up just to protect this industry which may be deamed "strategic" to go the way of the dodo bird??
