Alright, alright, don't get your underwear all in a twist.

The spider bit me, me, me! Just like last year. I'm pretty sure it was a Black Widow (again). The bitch.

I was putting something out in the garage one night last week, when I felt an intense itching and burning sensation on my calf. I didn't see the evil critter (it was dark), but I think I recognize the bite. This was a bit stronger than the one last year, which took a couple of weeks to heal and killed some tissue near the bite. I washed the new bite with hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, and betadine soap. It developed a large scab in a day or so, but the skin around the scab was red and tender for a couple of days.

I didn't think much more about it, but over the next few days I began eating aspirins for some aches and pains that I began to have. Muscle and joint aches. I felt tired all the time. A day or two after that I began to feel feverish. I didn't actually have a fever, but I felt hot all the time. And then I began having these-- really depressing daydreams. I'd be going about my work, and disturbing and troubling thoughts would keep running through my mind. (I'm sure you think this is quite normal for us posties, but actually most of us have absolutely nothing going on in our little heads.)

This really sucked. I didn't mind the physical symptoms, but the constant life-is-bleak crap was wearing me down. Instead of being wise-guy flippant, I was becoming sullen, moody, and angry. Not that any of you would notice the difference, but I did, and it was getting hard for me to control my temper. And unfortunately, when my dear family threw a birthday dinner for me, was I happy and cheerful? Noooooooooo........

They were the first to suspect that the mystery bite was amplifying my often dreadful personality. Which maybe it was. I dunno. I feel fine now. No more obsessive negative thoughts. No more aches and pains and imaginary fevers. Now I'm just my normal obnoxious self. I dunno how the spider feels. I hope it feels worse than me.
