Dan3, RE: A recent set of visits to SAM's (as an example), a chain with 600+ stores showed AMD going from 0% to 2/3's of units displayed. Visits to Best Buy showed AMD going from 0% to about 33% of units displayed.

Have you ever correlated your anecdotal evidence with actual data? E.g. has display space Sam's been a leading indicator of market share changes in the past?

Dan, <Observation that they have taken between 1/4 and 1/3 of the retail SKUs>

In other words, you see a few more Athlon-based laptops on the shelves of your local retail chain, and you instantly conjure up quantitative market share numbers based on such observations.
