Earth's temperature is taken through a network of thermometers on ships, buoys and land-based weather stations.

Many of the land-based weather stations are located at airports. 75 years ago these airports were grassy meadows. Today they are in the middle of acres of concrete and asphalt. Are temperatures there warmer? Duh.
