"Also even if Castro is better then Batista (and I don't think this has been established) that still does not exuse the stupidity and brutality of his regime. "

Whether or not you or I agree that Castro was better than Batista, in Cuba they think so. Heck, you can even get some Cubans that are in the US to agree that is the case, and they have every reason to downplay Castro.

"I don't know how common prostitution was under Batista"
Very. Cuba had a reputation to uphold at the time.

"but it is not accurate to imply that the average person at the time was or had to be a prostitute, pimp, or a gangster."
I didn't say that. I just said life was difficult unless you moved in that direction. Sure, they could work in the cane fields, but that wasn't a great life.

"On the other hand prostitution is very common in Cuba now."
Yes it is. Ever since the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba has been in a bind and they have revived the casinos and are pimping for the tourist trade. Which is why this is a very opportune time to normalize relations with Cuba. Castro is burning up the goodwill with his people that he managed to build up over the past few decades. If the US can offer opportunities other than tourist trade, then we can capture their hearts and minds (as the Vietnam era slogan went). It would be nice to see things change peacefully...
