You are so confused. They did make dollars more efficiently as their sales went through the roof.

As well, there is no law that says productivity gains should be reflected in the books of an individual company. That is what creative destruction is all about. The wealth level of society might rise even though firms individually were put out of business. Smaller inputs for the aluminum industry frees up resources (labour, raw materials) to be used elsewhere in the economy, which increases productivity.
