In fact, the new SIA monthly sales report placed the Americas chip market behind the Asia Pacific region and Japan for the first time ever. Compared to the previous month, worldwide chip sales fell 8.8% to $11.60 billion in June vs. $12.71 billion in May, based on the SIA's three-month moving average. Semiconductor revenues worldwide were down 30.7% from a year ago when chip sales totaled $16.74 billion in June 2000, the report said. The new SIA report underscores just how hard the 2001 downturn is hitting the U.S. and the entire Americas chip market. In June, semiconductor revenues in the Americas fell 12.9% to $2.91 billion from $3.34 in May, based on the three-month moving average, the report said. Chip sales in the Americas were down 45.1% in June from $5.31 billion in the same month last year. Chip sales in Japan were also down, but the rate of decline--measured in U.S. dollars--continues to be less than the drop in the Americas. Japan's semiconductor revenues slipped 5.8% to $2.97 billion in June vs. $3.15 billion in May, based on the three-month moving average. Japan's chip sales were 20.0% lower than $3.71 billion in June 2000, the SIA said. For the second month in a row, chip sales in the Asia Pacific region topped other regional markets during June. The region held on to its top position by slipped just 5.8% to $3.18 billion in June vs. $3.38 billion in May, when Asia Pacific passed the Americas as the world's largest chip market. Asia Pacific chip sales were 25.3% lower in June than $4.26 billion in the month last year, the SIA report said. Europe's chip sales were also hit hard by the downturn in June, falling 10.6% to $2.53 billion compared to $2.83 billion in May. Europe's semiconductor revenues were 26.8% lower in June than $3.46 billion in the month last year, according to the report. While June's numbers were ugly, many in the industry believe the worst of the slump is now over and after a gentle drop to slightly lower levels in the third quarter, a rebound is finally expected. "Based on the inventory reduction that has occurred in the first half of 2001 and the further reductions projected for the third quarter, we believe the industry will return to sequential growth in the fourth quarter of this year," George Scalise, president of the SIA in San Jose.
