As I recall, the researchers didn't give any reason, but posited theories, the prime one of which seemed to be that the kind of people willing to do "test drive" relationships tended to have beliefs and principles which were less conducive to long term commitments.

Another theory might be that the sort of people who remain virgin untim marriage might tend to have beliefs and commitments that would lead them to stay in a marriage even if they would be better off out of it.

It is a terrible mistake to assume that all marriages that end in divorce are failures, and all marriages that do not end in divorce are successes. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
