Hi Winston,

"OS-less PC" or any term like that are badly stated. The argument is not that a system will not have an OS, but it will have an OS (or a piece of code like the OS) that's independent of the applications. This argument relies on the idea that all of your application can be done through a thin client that's browser based. In essence, these people argue that you will be able to download your applications (ASP-based) and run them within your browser environment. Yahoo! Mail, for example, is sort of a browser based application.

The ASP-will-offer-every-application folks believes that this is the best way to overcome MSFT's OS monopoly.

Another example of an ASP-based application is Ariba's Marketplace, which requires the user to download a java applet that runs on IE or Netscape. This Java applet acts as a client and interacts with the server over the Internet. Unlike the Yahoo! Mail, this requires you to download an executable (the java applet) to your machines first. I maybe wrong, but I consider both Ariba Marketplace and Yahoo! Mail ASP-based applications.

In my opinion, ASP has its places, but I don't think it will effect MSFT's OS monopoly. At least not any time soon.

I hope this helps, and other more knowledgeable people please correct or add.

Khan
