This is an area that is still pristine.

That's right - a pristine, muddy tundra, suitable for absolutely nothing (except as the best possible site for a meteor to crash into the Earth).

1.5 million acres or 8% on the northern coast of ANWR is being considered for development. The remaining 17.5 million acres or 92% of ANWR is not under consideration for development. Should oil be discovered, less than 2000 acres of the over 1.5 million acres of the Coastal Plain would be affected.

how much oil is in the ANWR

Of course, no one knows the answer to this question. However, USGS estimated the Coastal Plain could contain 17 billion BBLS oil and 34 Trillion Cubic Feet of gas. DOI subsequently estimated that "in-place resources" range from 4.8 billion to 29.4 billion barrels of oil. They also reported identifying 26 separate oil and gas prospects in the Coastal Plain that could each contain "super giant" fields (500 million barrels or more).

The best answer available at this time is "billions of barrels of oil and trillions of feet of gas". This rivals the initial reserves from Prudhoe Bay.

Above is what the experts say. My answer is: "It's a bunch".

Ted Re..But that really is not the point. This is an area that is still pristine. Pristine means we have't screwed with it. <<<<<<<<<

The area by the oil field isn't pristine as there is a military airfield nearby, and there are several tribes of Indians, and Prudhoe Bay is only 200 miles away. Unless you aren't counting Alaskan indians as human.Plus there are 75,000 caribou in the area during the summer, a time or yr. when they wouldn't be drilling.

And you haven't answered my question....how much oil is in the ANWR? <<<<<<

The geologists estimate between .6 and 2 billion barrels.
