No. Justified or not, there is an undercurrent of pleasure being expressed about this spat of layoffs around the valley. Many casual conversions have touched on the need for a reality check among the dot.com generation; usually prefaced with a mention of their lack of work ethic and conflict management skills, or the narcissism so prevalent in this generation.

One employee’s perspective:

… I was told repeatedly that our department would not be affected. I was also told how well the company was doing; including being told in a meeting that the MSO's are so happy with our performance that COX and Comcast are going to renew their exclusives through 2006! Everything is just fine and then what happens? I come in Monday, the first of the month right after I just paid my outrageous sillycon valley rent, I am told to pack up my desk and turn in my badge, I no longer have a job with the company. There was No thanks for your commitment and dedication, it was more like I just got caught shoplifting and was being escorted out, no compassion at all!

Welcome to reality.

Layoffs:

First round: dead beats and troublemakers.
Second round: duplicate employees. merge job duties – cut some more.
Third round: cut at the margins of the business – core still intact.
Fourth round: cut from scaled back or discontinued operations.
Fifth round: management sycophants - first positive impact on operations.

Iterate back to 4 until business fails, is sold, or becomes profitable.
