Are we losing ground? The US is the technical atom bomb of the world. You don't do that with a poorly educated populace. One common answer to that is the immigration has made up for the deficiencies of the American educational system. Yet the large majority of American scientists and engineers are American born and educated.

Here's another thought: As the military needs a war, the NEA needs a failing educational system. If the system is doing just fine, what's the incentive to put more money into it? If it isn't failing, claim it is anyway.

Flap when you see universities having to reeducate students in the basics then it is obvious that we have a problem. UCLA which supposedly screens to get the best has to provide basic Math and English because the students are far behind. With the Internet and other advancements I do believe that there are pockets in the country where education is still very good. Troy Michigan is an example of that where the public school system is strong. Blacks have stepped backwards. The literacy rate among black people has declined. They have not advanced as a group despite all the opportunities there. I blame the fallen civil rights leaders and opportunistic politicians for this.

By the way I am glad to see that the truckers have won so far with this banning of the Mexican trucks from free access to come across the order. To me this shows utter stupidity and contempt for the working class on the Bush administration. This New World crap will displace the AMerican worker by tying his hands behind his back while letting others have free ride.
These politicians are for themselves and rarely for the people
