Nortel sees no recovery till mid-2002

BRAMPTON, Ont. (CBS.MW) -- Nortel Networks, the world's largest telecommunications equipment maker, said Wednesday that it does not anticipate a recovery in industry spending before the second half of 2002.

In its quarterly report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company added that "there can be no certainty as to the duration or severity of this industry adjustment."

The Ontario-based company reiterated that it won't provide year-end forecasts and said it would take an additional cash charge in the third quarter for previously announced job cuts. Nortel has said it will slash 30,000 jobs this year.
