a brief reasponse, due to time limitations--Did i say they scoffed Christ, even the notorious Voltaire, stated that the Christ of history was a great man, with great vision, but it was betrayed.
William Blake was a Deist, but profoundly fascinated and admiring and deeply mystical regards Jesus of Nazareth.
Tom Paine, who due to the blind bigotries of those who believed in defining christianity in their own narrow parameters, was branded an atheist, and Teddy Roosevelt referred to Paine as "That Damned Atheist".
This is a matter for long debate, but bottomline,it is ,those who are mean-spirited,but accept Jesus as their savoir are cowards hiding under the skirts of their imaginary Jesus, thinking,as long as i believe in him i will be saved.
Rubbish,mean-spirited is mean-spririted.
Do you think a good-spirited non-christian African, will be damned anyway,if he rejects Jesus as his savoir. What is the meaning of the tale of the Good Samaritan???
I regret deeply the multitude of crimes made by the fools that twisted the message of Jesus into something he would never recognize and would himself condemn.
By the way i firmly believe in critical analysis of the Gospels and in identifying those passages Jesus did NOT say,but were inserted later as his message was already being corrupted.
Also,for Clinton bashers,Jefferson's sex-life and Franklin's sex-life were not exactly the straight and narrow.Max
P.S. do you think Jesus would condemn George Soros for his atheism, even though his philanthropy is massive and lives by the code of Andrew Carnegie who stated "He who dies rich dies in Shame".(Carnegie himself is a complex case, but i,on analysis, rule in his favor. He must, like all men,be judged within the context of their times)
What do rightwingers think of Ayn Rand,an unequivocal atheist??? That would be interesting.
aside--I just viewed a 2 and 1/2 documentary on the life of Ayn Rand, and find she is much misunderstood by BOTH the Right and Left.
