To be honest, I'm not sure what is driving consumer decisions these days. I would like to say features like CD burners, but it seems like every mainstream PC comes with that. Memory is too easy to upgrade to be a driver. MHz I'm sure is still a key, but I think it drives the decision to purchase a new PC, rather than which PC to buy. Does a consumer perceive a significant value difference between a 1.4 GHz and a 1.5 GHz, when they are upgrading from a 600 MHz, I think not. What else is there?

With this lack of specification differentiation, I think that brand equity and value, both for the PC manufacturer and the microprocessor, become increasingly important. Consumers don't feel comfortable unless they have something to base their decision on, where they can say to themselves "That's the one I want, it's perfect". And consumers that don't feel comfortable will rarely open their wallet, too many other places to spend hard earned/saved money, if they have any doubts. To easy to walk away, and say, I'll buy it later when I see what I want.

Advertising for all PC's still sucks, but that's another topic.
