<<In this scenario, hopefully they will be smart about who gets out of jail and who doesn't, but I doubt it.>>

In Colorado first out were sex offenders

Horgad, you must have been asleep the last few years, Bud. The privatization of the prison system has been a growing trend for probably the last 12 years. The is GOOD money in privatization of prisons. So much so, that communities are getting in line to bid on those contracts because of the jobs and prison labor output stimuli to local economies.

So, who profits from them? The owners, of course. Ever see what a pair of Oregon prison labor made blue denim pants goes for on the public retail scene? And the state pays the per diem, and the prisoner gets a pitance, and the owner makes the spread between cost of goods and the wholesale, or cuts out the wholesaler entirely and does the marketing and distribution directly!

Don't have to be in bed with a politician to get one of these lucrative prisons built in the state of Oregon...it's typical bid submission process and to the winner goes the spoils.

Maybe you're not from around these parts??? And Oklahoma went the privatization of prisons route before we did out here as I recall.

Selah.

Like to start my own jail for politicians. Everyone gets life. Voice stress analysers would be used to detect whenever they were lying or hypocraticising. Lies would result in beatings with rubber hoses. They would be forced to listen to campaign promises and policy statements that were later broken and give reasons why these were stated or done. If they refused to answer, no food. Videotapes of question and answers and punishment would be sold to the public. The only trouble with running a business like this is, while highly profitable, it would wear out punishment squads in no time. Finding people in good enough shape to administer that many beatings that many times a day to that many liars would be difficult. We could throw in lawyers for low grade entertainment. It would be easier to detect when lawyers where lying. A simple sound detector would do the trick, although gestures should be considered too. Perhaps a doppler lawyer-speak detector mechanism would be more appropriate, as some lawyers can lie with a mere shrug. Politicians are a higher grade type of liar who will occasionally tell the truth just to keep people off balance.

I've got it. Most criminality can safely be predicted by pschological tests and genetic characteristics. You could throw in some inferences from observation of appearance, as most criminals are male and ugly. Observation of childhood bevhaviour would be germane, as most have a troubled youth. There are identifying genes that indicate the tendency to anger, alcoholism, drug addiction and sociopathy. (The Hemingway gene was found last year that explains suicides, drunks and addicts.) Also, except for some creative criminals like extremely high profile white collar criminals, who actually contribute to society (junk bond financings), most criminals are dullards. Once analysed, these people would be rotated out of and into no fault jails! They would be given 50% time in and out, and setup with implants for tracking and ID. It might be better to come up with a memory erasure technique for their time on the outside as no fault has to be accepted by the criminal type as well as by society.

Society would not know, as it does not know now, if the "criminal" is not ID'd for them. All that remains is for the criminals not to know either. The exclusion would ensure a productive society, as the numbers inside would do really useful work, as in making automobiles and mining. Education would be compulsory in keeping with the no fault aspect, as they do not have to do anything to get there, just be susceptible. All one would do is put the lower ten percent of society into these programs and you would get a net 5% incarceration. (12 million in the can at any one time.) This would guarantee an extremely low crime rate and cheap goods for all.

It would probably be safe to ignore all crime in the non- incarcerates as the prevalence of it would be rare and never rise, and therefore not require expensive judicial intervention or deterrence. Civil suits limited to perhaps a maximum of 15 years normal salary as settlement would take care of all other disputes.

The advantages are:

1. no fault, no social stigma, no revenge on society.
2. "low lifes" could learn good trades.
3. great reduction in crime without lawyers or police or judges. big cost savings. less corruption.
4. less alcoholism and drug abuse would affect society.
5. safer streets.
6. no jail costs, as "prisoners" would produce.
7. zero recidivism or return to crime. What crime?
8. poverty and disease would be reduced as the criminal classes are usually the poorer classes as well.
9. low end people would always have something to do. they would actually feel better about themselves as they would be engaged in creative tasks.
10. While we are at it we could do away with democratic party rep government as laws would be unecessary for the most part and this eliminates legislatures. All we need is to set a few trade and economic regs.
11. Expand the criminal class to 25% and you could do all the work with criminals and all other people could get government jobs. (Canada) Tax would be unecessary and salaries low because the wage component of production would be zero except for cell keeping cost.

I think they are moving toward this anyway in most places.
As a matter of fact it has already been tried with moderate success in Australia, Israel and Quebec.
