I don't see where faith precludes self-confidence and self-respect nor does it preclude the acceptance of risk. Some would say that belief that you are on the "winning team" is somewhat the essence of what this country is about. It's not surprising to find philosophers who are cynical about faith and pride does not go hand in hand as he states and is in fact frowned upon by most creeds. Other words for pride are vanity, vainglory and conceit, hardly positive labels that those who profess faith would accept willingly.
