"Too many parents do not love their children, but rather an idea of their children, and actively resist listening or looking when their children try to point out where reality and fantasy diverge....... This may have happened in your small circle but if you look at the norm standard it is not filled with overly henpecked youth. It is filled with youth who have been led to believe (by their parents) that guidance and standards are opressive obstacles to freedom. Then there are those annoying statistics (15 million new cases of STDs each year in the USA, 39% of children born unwanted, aborted children....).

There are definitely parents pushing for a trophy kid. This can be very harmful. There are also parents who do not love their children, but actively seek approval and validation from them. This leaves an etherical adult in charge that lacks foundation. When children begin to test guidelines that they are not prepared for, a loving parent with the objective perspective of an outsider and with the wisdom that years and experience brings will be the needed foundation. Head strong youth can step off the foundation and test the beyond, but when problems arise will a foundation be there for them or an "atta boy" buddy...
