When my kids were three or so. I made it very clear that if you go wild in a public place (like a grocery store) we leave.

Last week when I was at the pool, there were only two other people there, a young woman and her son of not more than three. They were puttering around in the baby pool while I was swimming laps. As I was drying off, the boy put his hand in the pool filter compartment and his mother told him that they were leaving, that she told him the last time that if he did it again they would leave, and they left. I was so startled and impressed that I made a point of complementing her on her parenting as she was gathering their things. She responded with a British accent. I should have known that she wasn't the typical American mom. <g>
