Dale: If the estimates of 20% higher cost and 10% lower yield for SOI are true, and AMD really is able to pace the peak speed grade of Northwood with the SOI Clawhammer, it would make more sense to produce a bulk silicon Clawhammer to address the value segment of the market instead of Barton. A bulk silicon Hammer would cost less to produce, especially if the SOI Clawhammer has 512KB L2 cache and the value segment Hammer had no more than 256KB L2 cache.

You're assuming that AMD will have Hammer infrastructure 100% ready, tried and tested by launch.

While I think the chance is good that infrastructure support will be good from the onset, it will still take 6 months for many market segments to adopt it over an existing, proven platform. This is not AMD specific - Intel also has to deal with it. This would seem to be (on of) the main reason(s) for the slow P4 uptake.

Additionally, new infrastructure is always more expensive than old infrastructure. This makes even a bulk Si version of Clawhammer uncompetitive (on price) with a Celeronized P4 - at least for the first 6 months or so. (that short a time-frame only because Clawhammer has integrated memory controller).

Please remind me again why AMD is using SOI ??!! Looks like a
bad decision on their part ... Or ... Maybe it is just Motorolo's
decision. Can't believe that AMD is following Motorolo on this
one. This is truly the "blind" leading the "blind".
