...Let's keep thinking all of us...

>>But we all consume.<< well, yes, but the running concern seems to be "Jeese, do we have enough consumers, do we consume enough" - sort of demand-side fears. Translated a little further - "Cant be, you will not have a second helping, look at the table".

I would love to see again the world of JFK saýing "We'll get to the moon before the decade is over". Have some Blood, sweat and tears suggested to me, Somebody give me a tall ship and a star to steer by. Make me lean and purpose- and not "fastfood-of-all-kinds"-filled. Make me productive (supply-sidish) and not couch-potatoish - "what have you consumed for me lately". What can I do for our country as opposed what can I consume for my country.

The rest is accounting and we can let others do that.

PS: The sobering fact is it looks like it's all set up, miles and miles of US factories full of invested dollars, purring at rather low utlitisation/speed, saying to us "we dont need workers, we need customers".

<If I wanted to impress people I'd drive a Mercedes or a Lexus or a Porsche.>

People are impressed by that? What shallow people surround you.

< It's just a car, a way to get from Point A to Point Z.>

No, it's a fashion statement. To get from point A to Point Z while being a fanatical conservationist, there are better transport modes than monster SUVs [which are not as safe as cars other than in head-on collisions with smaller vehicles, deer and children].

< I do care about the environment, I recycle more than anyone else I've ever known or heard of.>

Way back in 1970, we threw out almost zero. All organic stuff was dug into the garden [newspapers included]. Metals all were sorted and went once a year to metal recyclers. Glass all went to the glass works. We had few plastic bags and we washed those out and hung them out to dry. We grew a lot of vegetables. Now I realize that was a waste of time and I chuck it all in the rubbish bin. The time wasted fiddling around at home sorting it would be better spent snoozing or doing something interesting or productive. If somebody else wants to recycle my rubbish, they are welcome to take it away and do so.

< I'm fanatical about conservation.>

Yes, and having an SUV burning a lot of fossil fuels and taking a LOT to produce, is helping recycle the carbon out of the eternal cemetery it's been buried in and feeding it to plants and therefore back into the ecosystem where it belongs. The greenhouse effect is good and George Bush was right to kick Kyoto into touch.

<This car wasn't intended to be my GFY to the rest of the world, it was intended to be my cocoon, my shield.>. What does GFY mean? See what I mean about modern 'ladies' whining about sexual harassment. Please send me your address so I can sue you for mentioning rude things in my workspace. From what I've seen, they give as good as they get, and more, because the males are feeling defensive [for the most part].

<I bought it after an accident where my husband ran into a deer on the highway while I was a passenger, that caused tremendous damage to the vehicle, and made me feel very unsafe.>

Heck, imagine if it had been a child on a bicycle or somebody standing on the road. I think your safety would be enhanced by improved driving techniques [yes, I know that sometimes animals such as cats, birds, children and deer might go running across a road though in my experience, they are always visible and I can anticipate that they will do something really stupid, deserving of a Darwin Award.

I bet you are pleased to get this free lecture!

Increasingly, nothing is private or personal because the trend is that people LIKE governments to run their lives for them and vote for more and more of it, more and more restrictions and more and more government control [which leads to power shortages such as California and NZ now have] and more and more 'it's for your own good' legislation. It's like the world is being buried in do-gooding bossy-britches who like nothing better than to tell other people how they MUST live their lives.

I am not telling you how to drive your SUV and whether you should have it. I'm just pointing out a few effects and oddities I notice. I don't care how much fuel you burn or deer you crash into or time you spend recycling. I do much more sensible things, like playing golf for a start.
