I don't really think the increased short mini position is that significant. Sure they are short 11K more ES, but its not a lot of dollars for them. What use would hedgers have for the minis anyway? I think its just the commercials taking the other side of the small spec trade who have increased their longs. Maybe they are as you say, toying with the plebes.

I have noticed the spikes in the futures and wonder if it has something to do with the thinner trading we are seeing there. Daily volume is down on the minis creating these moments of illiquidity no?

I also watch the minis carefully and noticed the same spikes you have. There hasn't been any change in overall volume lately, either.

My only guess is that they're scheduling a shakeout of the longs soon.

Alternatively, it may be the seconds who have been left in town to run things while the first team vacations elsewhere are attempting to demonstrate that they are ready for prime time.
