Hi JD Canuck; From the People's Daily, a comment on PC sales in China:

The lucrative PC market in China has attracted famous PC manufactures worldwide. A low-price strategy in China adopted by Dell has increased its sales in Asia by 40 percent. Some other famous brands, such as IBM and Compaq, are also targeting at China's market and a fierce competition between domestic PC producers and foreign counterparts is predicted within half a year.

Yeah, sure, Rambus is going to be a big hit over there!

Hi all; Legend PC selling Pentium 4s to (rich communist) Chinese:

Legend PC Sales Surge as Asia Feels Pinch
English People's Daily, July 27, 2001
Top China computer maker Legend Holdings' PC unit shipments in Asia rose 44.5 percent in the April-June quarter from a year ago, but the area is not immune to global PC doldrums, a research group said.
...
Beijing-based Legend, which sells the vast majority of its PCs in its home country, is nonetheless by far the market share leader in the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan, and its share increased slightly to 12.1 percent, followed by International Business Machines and Compaq Computer Corp.
...

So let's see what Legend PC is selling in China... I find 4 computers, each with the note "SOLD IN CHINA ONLY / MORE IN CHINESE":
legend-holdings.com

Since I read Chinese fluently (at least as far as telling a Pentium III from a Pentium 4, LOL), I can identify the four computer models as follows:

(1) Tianhui
Targeting to children ...

I think we can be pretty sure that Legend isn't targeting P4s at Chinese children. Next!

(2) Future Pioneer [LOL!!! I can barely type the name!!! {Gasps for breath...}]
... appeals to high school students ... Pentium 4 with 4X AGP TNT2 32M
legend.com.cn

Yeah, that would make a lot of sense. Put a TNT2 into an expensive P4 box.

(3) Tianlu
Pentium III
legend.com.cn

And sure enough, another Pentium 4!!!

(4) Conet II
And a Pentium 4:

Now we know what's happening to all that Pentium 4 production that isn't being bought in the US! It's being shipped to China!

Hi all; What computers Dell is selling in China (and in English!). The Chinese only home web site is here, and prices are "RMB", which surely bodes well for RMBS, LOL!!!

dell.com

Anyway, as long as JC_Canuck is hoping for big time P4 sales in China, I might as well take note of what models are available and what memory types they use. (When the P4 SDRAM and DDR roll out, we'll take a look back at this post and see how Rambus well fared.)

SmartPC 100 SDRAM (810E)
SmartPC 200 SDRAM (810E)

dell.com

Dimension 8100 RDRAM (850)
Dimension 4100 SDRAM (815E)
Dimension L SDRAM (810E)

dell.com

Let's get this straight. In the US, Dell sells 6 RDRAM lines and 5 SDRAM lines. (See #reply-16137658) In China, Dell sells 1 RDRAM line and 4 SDRAM lines. And JD_Canuck thinks that China is going to see a lot of RDRAM sales... I don't think so.
