Re: "AMD can get about 350 80mm die off an 8" wafer"

No kidding?

Well, Dan3 - you just posted ANOTHER LIE !!

An 8 inch wafer DOES NOT QUITE HAVE 350 COMPLETE DIE SITES for an 80 SQ. MM die - a bit less, in fact.

Yet YOU CLAIM that AMD gets 100% YIELD on these die .

My, my, my !!

Really, Dan3 - your nose must be 13 feet long by now !!

Dan3,

Re: " ... then the cost per die goes up to $14 instead of $8 per
die (much closer to what the actual cost will likely be)."

Please, with your indepth "knowledge" of IC costs, explain again
why AMD is predicting a Q3 loss. Will AMD's ASPs fall that much ... I don't
think you know what you are talking about ... Sorry. TIA

Make It So,
Yousef

There are closer to 300 possible good die in a 8" wafer @80mm2 if you start counting edge loss. Then you have to adjust for yield and about another 10% lose at final testing.

OTOH, Youseless is a process expert and can verify this. I wouldn't trust him on anything to do with Mhz though. He once swore the K6 would never get over 300 Mhz or the Athlon would make it over 400 Mhz. When the Athlon appeared and AMDs stock price went up he went searching for his shorts and dissappeared for a year or two. Of course when AMDs stocked dropped he convieniently reappears to play pass the salami with Paul. Hey, things never change. sigh.

If AMD can get a 35% increase in clock speed with SOI it's well worth dedicating a fab to it. AMD can always have a back up non-SOI plan in place...maybe even functioning FAB space.

>Increasing it by around 10% (the typical estimate) is just about meaningless.<

The typical estimate is between 20% and 30%. Nevertheless, while Barton will be more expensive to manufacture than Thoroughbred, it will probably be cheaper than Spitfire Duron.
