The short of it is that there was tremendous negative psychology around the project (As with most gargantuan human endeavors). The British came in at the last moment (as revenues were just beginning to build - like we see with GX) and bought out all the original shareholders at fractions of the early spikes in valuation (also similar to GX). My comments are more to get folks to think about the psychology of the moment and then compare it to financial reality (Owners Earnings). The British went on to own the canal for 100 years with ridiculous profits pouring in their coffers.

Regarding you inquiry of ownership please note that I am a Principal at a firm that continues to put significant amounts of money to work in GX. Most likely our position will increase another 15% (on our share count) in the coming weeks. So, we are holders and fond buyers.
