"I wonder if you feel "free enough" in exercise of free speech..."Huh? Dark satanic Kraut conspiracies? What's the impression west of Atlantic on freedom of expression in Germany, or for that matter anywhere outside US?! BTW, we use forks (hey! interesting...) and no, women (with few remarkable exceptions of course) do not have to shave, it's just men.

"...to speculate as to how Germans holding Deutchmarks are going to handle January 1, 2002."

That's how I see it: they'll have a slight hangover because of New Years eve, wake up late and watch TV in the afternoon or visit friends. Go to bed 11pm. Same applies to those having no DM to hold (assuming they got a TV and/or friends). In other words it will be a NONEVENT.

Logistics of the change of course is humungous - I dont even know the x in 1o^x in notes printed, weight of coins to be distributed, number of military convoys needed etc etc. I just know I am looking forward to it - finally the italian waiter, austrian toilet lady etc will get what I know they are due.

This is retail, man-on-the-street, level. On the wholesale level Germany is a little behind compared to the rest - think of all the book keeping which will have to go through some kind of Y2K event.

On the whole I enjoy all the bad mouthing and expressions of sympathy ("this will not end well, I tell ya...") etc. You long for a chance to change US dollars for DM? Take euro, it's got DM, and FFR, BBR, HLG etc etc on top of it - well there's also ITL and Greek drachma will join sometime down the road, but I guess this irrelevant.

Of course if there's some Kahuna coming our common way, we'll all get wet. In the meantime euro is at 88 and climbing. Wonder why;
