Well.... We did do an over-nighter at the mounds and had planned another night but had to leave because of the tropical depression that is closing in on the Gulf coast. Rain set in about 3:30 A.M. and never stopped so we broke camp and just go back, soaked to I might add.

We had an interesting day yesterday, which included a visit to the museum there where the entire left 1/3 of the museum was inside one of mounds. You can see the excavated remains of a Kolomoki King and 3 of his servants. There is a fairly wicked story behind this particular mound and I’m not going to go into any detail on this thread about it but I may PM it. I have digital photos that I am going to try to upload today.

Another of the seven mounds there should really be called a pyramid with a shaved or flat top. This was a ceremonial mound dating back to 800 A.D.

It's based is 600 ft in each direction. It is 325 feet tall. We climbed a very steep stairway to the flat top. I hope the photo we took from there, which I hope will hint at how high this structure is. All and all it was an amazing trip.

I link back the web page that I load the photos to if you are interested in seeing them.

Oh Yeah, we had a big cook out last night and then roasted marshmallows over a campfire.
