I contend, since it is a short position I should realize the income in the year it expires.

You are correct. The income is reported in the same year as the option expiration. The only exception is where you are selling options to avoid a tax payment for sale of a stock in the same year (for example, I sell deep in the money calls for next year on a stock that I've held for less than a year, and then report it next year as a long term gain.)
