Vic, who's been talking about auto parts ?
>The second-best U.S. stock market group this year, auto parts, received no such help from resurrected Internet shares. The group is up 45 percent. That's thanks in part to Aftermarket Technology (ATAC: news, chart, profile), which does business with Ford Motor. The small Illinois company increased financial targets a couple of days ago. Aftermarket Tech rebuilds old drivetrains and car radios.

The auto parts business is probably not an industry most investors scoped out earlier this year as a stock market winner. Yet in the face of abysmal profits from the big car makers, parts suppliers are thriving. Dura Automotive Systems (DRRA: news, chart, profile) boss Karl Storrie last month said his company and competitors used the economic downturn to reduce sloppy inventories, slash expenses and trim debt.

If a recession threat is what it takes to get a company in gear, most investors should be praying for an extended downturn.
