I don't have any idea, but I think that Chip and Atin are trying to figure it out. I find that the 1pt chart gives a better feel than the default 2pt.

The point and figure thread has a discussion on this - but basically it is a difference in the stocks that are considered part of the universe of NYSE stocks. We're still trying to figure this out (actually we have a solution, and are in the process of implementing it).
