Re: the AMD MP servers aren't selling

Tony,

There are now 3 companies marketing cases for SMP Athlon systems, and a large variety of memory modules is being marketed for the boards. Pricing for the chips and the boards they run on has been holding up better than most other X86 products.

Infrastructure doesn't spring up like that unless there are sales. Other than wishful thinking, what do you base your conclusions on? Remember that Dell is No. 2 in sales, No. 1 is "other", the sum of white box VAR sales, and AMD does very well in that market.

Look for an SMP AThlon case, and compare it to trying to find P4 cases last quarter when Intel sold over a million units.

Not apples to apples, by any means, but convincing evidence that Athlon MP systems are ramping nicely.

Dan

Supermicro Athlon dual processing board.... a considerable coup for AMD.

213.219.40.69

As we reported at the launch of the MP systems, AMD is also committed to producing cheaper systems which will use Duron technology

It's one way to double the size of the processor market...

This is a bandwagon Intel might want to consider jumping on.

Dear Tony:

If a single retailer sells 500 Tyan MP boards in a quarter, and there are probably at least 10 retailers of MP boards, then there are 5K sales of MP boards per quarter. According to a previous post, 347,045 server units shipped for Q2 and with at least 5,000 MP units, AMD already has about 1.5% of the server unit market up from 0%, an infinite improvement which is far better than a few %. And that is just the first quarter of a ramp up. I think they are selling, and this being a "stealth" launch, when you grudgingly agree that they are visibly selling, AMD will have share in the teens and will have a firm foothold in the server market. And then, Intel's "invincible armor" will go visibly "poof". You better hope that Intel isn't visibly bleeding red at that time.

Pete

Tony,

RE:"Dell is up in double figures YOY selling Intel based servers.

Read: Giving away Intel based servers...pay me later.

RE:"AMD wasted their money on MP".

Read: How dare anyone do what Intel does...of course they are wasting their money.

RE:"Somebody ask Sanders what the ROI is on those DOAs."

Of course Sanders is stupid. He has the audacity to compete against Intel. That will not go unpunished, commandant!

LOL, Jim
