Official Says Taiwan's Semiconductor Foundries Must Advance
TAIPEI, Aug 7 Asia Pulse - Taiwan's semiconductor foundries must shift from the production of 8-inch wafers to 12-inch wafers to maintain their competitiveness in the international market, an industrial official said Monday.
Shih Yen-hsiang, director-general of the Industrial Development Bureau, said that after Taiwan's two leading semiconductor foundries, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. [TSMC] and United Microelectronics Corp. (TAIEX:2303), announced that they were going to concentrate on 12-inch wafer manufacturing, Macronix International and Winbond Electronics (TAIEX:2344) also decided to invest in 12-inch wafer manufacturing plants.

Toshiba to cut DRAM output at Japan plant by 60%
TOKYO, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Japan's biggest chip maker Toshiba Corp said on Wednesday it would slash its DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chip output at its Yokkaichi plant in Japan by 60 percent from the end of September to cope with sluggish demand.

Japanese chipmakers have been plagued with excess inventory as global demand for semiconductors remains sluggish. Toshiba is the latest to announce a chip production cut.

``We have decided to adjust production at Yokkaichi in order to reconstruct the operation of our memory business,'' a Toshiba spokesman said.

Toshiba's Yokkaichi plant is now producing 11.5 million DRAM chips a month. It will reduce the production to 4.5 million chips from late September, the spokesmans aid.
