Since they're pulled from a melt, I would think that the shape of the phase change would dictate the shape of the pulled crystal. It seems like you could get different shapes than circular, but you'd have to create them with a silicon melt that wasn't all at the same temperature. That would undoubtedly be more difficult to control.

I guess I should add that this SOI idea sounds like a good idea to me. I'm sure that AMD has figured out what the resulting yields and expenses will be, and they wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't a good idea. Historically, AMD has got better results from any given process level than Intel, (they had to, they sell their stuff cheaper) and the future doesn't look like an exception.

P.S. Of course I don't know anything about this either, but it's getting down right boring over on the RMBS thread. No one with any brains is still holding the stock, so I don't have anybody worth exchanging insults with. :(
