I do not think that any country suffered more in WW2 than China, especially if we take the Pacific war to have begun with the Japanese invasion of China. The death toll in China between 1937 and 1945, from war, famine, and disease, is staggering, so far out of scale with Western standards that it is nearly incomprehensible.

Overall, 1911-1945 was an extraordinary and hugely traumatic time for China. Most of the current generation of leaders were shaped during this period, and understanding it is a crucial part of understanding - and dealing with - modern China. I wonder how many of those concerned with policy toward China have taken the trouble....
