Avanex Corporation Announces Two Executive Promotions
FREMONT, Calif., Aug 8, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Avanex Corporation (Nasdaq: AVNX chart, msgs), the global provider of photonic processors that enable next-generation performance for optical communications networks, today announced that Chief Technology Officer Dr. Simon Cao also has been named Senior Vice President of Business Development and that Thomas LaWer has been promoted to Vice President and General Counsel, and will serve as Secretary to the Board.

Dr. Cao, one of the founders of Avanex, assumes additional responsibilities for developing Avanex strategic relationships to advance Avanex's long-term global growth initiatives.

Dr. Cao is recognized as one of the leading figures in the optics field. He helped develop the first wavelength division multiplexing system and developed critical elements for the first erbium doped fiber amplifier system. He holds or has pending more than 36 optical-related patents. Dr. Cao holds doctorate degrees in physics and electrical engineering.

LaWer joined Avanex as Associate General Counsel in July 2000 and has served as General Counsel since April 2001. Before joining Avanex, he was an Associate at the law firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati since 1995. From 1988 until 1992 he was an accountant at KPMG Peat Marwick and received a C.P.A. He holds a law degree from the University of Chicago and a bachelor of science from the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania.
