Taiwan's TFT-LCD Sales Show Negative Growth in June as Monitor Demand Settles
August 6, 2001 (TAIPEI) -- Sales of Taiwan's TFT-LCD panel manufacturers in June showed a huge decline in contrast to May 2001.

Sales by Acer Display Technology Inc. and Unipac Optoelectronics Corp. declined by 17 percent and 26 percent each from the previous month.

The total shipments for both ADT and Unipac in June were around 300,000 pieces, a large decrease from the figure in May of 380,000 pieces. The decrease in ADT shipments was due to the settled growth of panels for monitors for the time being, while the decrease in Unipac shipments was caused by the sluggish growth of panels for notebook PCs. Demand for monitors and notebook PCs, both of which are the most important applications of TFT panels, seems to be facing a landing again. This is backed up by the fact that panel manufacturers are similarly marking time as Amtran Technology Co., Ltd., a representative LCD monitor manufacturer in Taiwan, showed a decline by 12 percent compared to the previous month, and by 23 percent compared to the same month the previous year.

Under the current order situation, sales of ADT and Unipac in July are most likely to be on the same level as June. What is noteworthy is whether the monitor demand will recover for the third time in August, when the new school year is about to begin in the United States. Manufacturers' comment that although the demand for notebook PC panels is weakening, inquiries for monitor panels are still strong, and the business will pick up again in August.

Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd. in Taiwan, which makes both CRT monitors and TFT-LCDs, saw an expanded decline of 13 percent from the previous month and 44 percent compared to the same month the previous year. The shipment quantities of CPT's TFT panels increased slightly from May, and no major change was found in the sales prices. Thus, the biggest reason for the sales decline appeared to be the slowdown of PC demand and the depression of demand for CRT monitors caused by the shift to LCDs.

On the other hand, Wintek Corp., which makes STN-LCD panels for mobile phones made by U.S.-based Motorola Inc. or France-based Alcatel, maintained the rising trend with a 14-percent increase compared to the previous month. Picvue Electronics Ltd., which provides monochrome panels for PDAs of Palm Inc. and Handspring Inc., both U.S.-based, has seen a sudden stop in its sales surge since March, and saw a sharp decrease of 38 percent from May and 59 percent compared to the same month the previous year. The company's sales in February had shown hot sales, with a 92-percent increase compared to the same month the previous year. This indicates how fast the users side have started to adjust inventories.
