Vietnam was part of a fourty year war in which the U.S. and U.S.S.R. fought through intermediaries. There were probably a great many interventions made on behalf by U.S. administrations, viewed as conservative or as liberal. It's interesting that Carter doesn't get the same skewering over Iran and Shah.
