Fujitsu Adds High-Performance Mobile Intel Pentium III processor-M Notebook to LifeBook Family
Advancements to Desktop Replacement Give Faster and Higher System Performance, Increase Total Benefit of Ownership

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 6, 2001-- Fujitsu PC Corporation (FPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fujitsu, Limited (TSE:6702), today announced the release of an updated LifeBook(TM) E Series, featuring the next-generation Mobile Intel® Pentium® III processor-M and Intel® 830 Chipset.

The adoption of Intel's new processing technology into the LifeBook E Series will result in faster and higher system performance. In combination with other features, this LifeBook can easily function as a desktop replacement, making it ideal for corporate and small office/home office (SOHO) users.

Fujitsu's high-performance desktop replacement is available with processor speeds of 1.13GHz, 1.06GHz, 1GHz and 933MHz. This ability to process data at greater speeds allows the LifeBook E Series to deliver lower power consumption and longer lasting performance, increasing total benefit of ownership and decreasing total cost of ownership.

``Intel's new mobile Pentium III processor-M technology offers users two distinct advantages from previous generations of the chipset,'' said Sara Nelson, FPC's vice president of marketing. ``It utilizes a 133MHz processor system in the CPU and chipset ensuring Fujitsu's desktop replacement users access to the fastest processors on the market. The processor also features copper wire instead of aluminum allowing the chip to run cooler, faster and cheaper.''

Coupling performance with exceptional service, Fujitsu now offers the LifeBook E Series with a three-year International Limited Warranty. The notebook comes in three recommended configurations and can also be customized to meet individual user needs by utilizing Fujitsu's Configure To Order (CTO) Program. With the estimated street price starting at $2,099, the LifeBook E Series is sold through Fujitsu's retail and reseller channels(1) as well as at www.fujitsupc.com or 1-877-FPC-DIRECT.

The LifeBook E Series is available with either a 30GB or 15GB Ultra DMA 100 hard drive, giving users a massive amount of space to store data. This new hard drive incorporates the 830MP Chipset, doubling the retrieval speeds to 100MB per second and improving the data transfer capabilities.

``Keeping pace with future advancements, the LifeBook E Series continues to be Fujitsu's high-performance, full-featured desktop replacement capable of handling today's most intensive applications,'' said Nelson. ``Fujitsu feels the strides made to increase the overall speed plus a new three-year International Limited Warranty have allowed FPC to demonstrate its commitment to creating mobile solutions with the end-user in mind.''

Other features that contribute to the LifeBook's increased performance include its ATI® Mobility(TM) RADEON(TM)-D with 16MB Double Density Rate (DDR) SDRAM video memory. The new video memory architecture doubles the data transfer between the video chipset and CPU to increase the amount of data displayed on the screen for improved multimedia and presentation capabilities.

The desktop replacement features a standard flexible bay for added functionality to allow users to swap devices, such as a CD-ROM, DVD, CD-RW, DVD/CD-RW combo drive or floppy disk drive. The flexible bay can also house a second battery, further differentiating the LifeBook E Series and extending the unit's battery life up to 6.5 hours(2). The second battery is the perfect solution for users who travel coast to coast or work for extended periods of time using only the battery.

The LifeBook E Series is preinstalled with Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional, Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Millennium operating system. This versatile selection of operating systems allows easy integration into a variety of different computing environments.

This desktop replacement features a full suite of connectivity services including a built-in 56K(3) V.90 modem and an integrated 10/100 base-Tx Ethernet standard, allowing communication in any type of environment. For users wanting to send and receive data remotely and untethered, the LifeBook E Series has two Type I/II or one Type III PC Card slots making it ``wireless ready'' with the addition of third-party PC Card hardware and application software. FPC is currently offering wireless Wide Area Network (WAN) services and hardware on its Web site as part of a co-marketing initiative with a wireless Internet service provider.

Fujitsu's desktop replacement measures 12.13 inches wide by 10.39 inches deep by 1.52 inches high and weighs approximately 5.8 pounds with a weight saver installed. The notebook is powered by one Lithium ion battery delivering up to 3.5 hours of battery life(2). The LifeBook E Series continues to employ a sleek cool silver (magnesium alloy) casing for improved overall durability.

Striving to provide its users with the highest level of security and flexibility options available, the LifeBook E Series includes a built-in Smart Card Reader(4) and programmable Application Panel. The built-in Smart Card Reader offers a range of applications such as secure online transactions, personalized authentication services, access to personal data storage and an ``e-cash'' payment option.

The Application Panel consists of four programmable one-touch launch buttons providing access to a variety of applications including email and Internet. The notebook comes with a software utility allowing users to define each button further enhancing the functionality of the unit for users. For additional security, the Application Panel can be used as a pre-boot security panel supplying over for 800,000 possible password combinations and prohibiting unauthorized powering on of the system and data theft.

Service and Support

The LifeBook E Series incorporates the Fujitsu Service Assistant, a Web-based diagnostic and resolution application preloaded on the system. The Fujitsu Service Assistant provides support solutions to the most common problems that may be experienced with just a simple click of the mouse. The diagnostic program was designed to increase customer satisfaction by delivering faster, more effective service, thus avoiding user frustrations usually associated with slower, non-technology-based service programs.

Fujitsu's LifeBook E Series is backed by a three-year International Limited Warranty for U.S. and Canadian customers. The warranty includes technical support, 24 hours a day, seven days a week(5). In addition, users can add First Cabin(SM) service and support options, including service upgrades that provide priority service, on-site service plan or a screen protection plan.

QVC had those A4 DVD/CDRW Notebooks

3 Sunday nights ago. They sold 2000 of them for $1999 in a few hours! What amazed me was how the bimbo pushing them mentioned that a Compaq rep was hanging around to see how they moved, yet despite having AMD's logo pimped all over the place, nobody said a word about the new A4 processor with it's new power management features, *sigh*. I doubt those retail chains can keep them in stock for long, especially with the back to school season upon us. There are so many crappy last year notebooks still in stock, that they probably hide the new Compaq's for fear all those fossils will never move.
