Paul: Above the molten silicon (all this is contained in an inert-gas atmosphere) on the end of a rod, a "seed" crystal of silicon (containing the same crystal orientation as the final desired cryatllographic orientation) is lowered into the molten silicon.

The orientation used in the semiconductor industry is 1 0 0, right?

Anyway, thanks for the detailed explanation&#133 I would've honestly thought the wafers were epitaxially grown, but I guess the throughput would just be way too slow for that.
