That is right. Here the conservatives do not want to change the Constitution, as Al Gore does when he calls it a living document. In England, a rightie would be someone protecting monarchy and colonialism.

Here, a conservative would also be one who wants laissez fairre. But a compassionate conservative would also fight for a safety net of some sort.

Whereas, a leftie want total control over everything.

That's a reactionary. So you might get away with claiming Russia's communists are reactionaries. If you consider that a revolution occurred in Russia about a decade ago, then they can also qualify as counter-revolutionaries. The Czar's boys did after 1917.
