I've been to Alpine ... took a look around the town on one of my trips to Big Bend. It's known for its higher elevation (for Texas) of 4000 feet or so, giving it a pleasant climate. It has a university, Sul Ross, and along with nearby Marfa, is increasingly becoming an art community. I've seen reports of those towns and Fredericksburg in the Hill Country having become locations for second-home getaways for wealthy folks in Houston and other Texas cities, as well as a Hollywood type or two wanting to escape the 'rat race' in Santa Fe.
