He did admit that as they approached the tiny village they encountered a hootch. He sent 3 men up to investigate and they came back and told him there were 5 people in it, and old man and woman and 3 children. He then sent them back and pulled them out and cut their throats. Kerrey's memory is fuzzy as to whether he was actually at the hootch but one of the guys who did the killing testified that Kerrey held one the victims down while he or she was being killed. According to the guy who broke the story they then approached the main part of the village, found nothing but women and children and absolutely no weapons. The witness said that they rounded everyone up in the middle of the village and shot them all. Kerreys version, and he was emphatic that he was not disavowing anyone else's memory, is that they thought they received fire from the village and proceeded hit it with everything they had. The fact that is revealing, the author of the story thought, is that all the victims were found gathered in a bunch in the middle of the village. It would seem that if they were indeed fired at in the dead of night from 100 yds or so, they would have taken refuge in the dugouts that were in all the hootchs. I don't know whether to feel sorry for Kerrey or not, but I disgusted we engaged in such activity and I do believe that the incident took place as described and will never condone the brutal murder of children in the situation described.
