That's if you believe the article. In my experience, the little guy always over-estimates the discount that the big guys get. The article was written by a mag dedicated to the "channel", the small white box retailers, so you could predict some level of exaggeration.

I would guess that Intel tries to maintain a fairly level playing field for all it's customers, to keep everybody relatively competitive and happily buying Intel chips. If they price to OEM's so that white box guys can't compete, they will lose the majority of that marketplace. It's a delicate balance that requires a lot of analysis.

But I agree with you that Intel isn't after 100% of the marketplace. Microsoft will go to a price of $0 (IE) to try to capture 100% share. With Intel's manufacturing costs, that's out of the question.
