From an economic viewpoint, the oil in ANWR is useless to us now

The same argument held for the establishment of the national reserve (of course, Clinton saw fit, for political reasons, to open it last year; but that's a different story).

We NEED to be less reliant on foreign imports. Not just for price stability, but for national security. In the event of a worldwide crisis (for example, a big war) we don't need to be hamstrung by insufficient crude supply. In this context, a little bit goes a long way.

Whether we can get the oil economically is immaterial, and not important at this time. We need access to the inventory, regardless of economics. Should a time come that the inventory is needed, it may not be perfect, but it will be better than nothing.
