It appears that new demands (video, music distribution, etc) absolutely will necessitate "last mile" access.

However, at this point in time, the market may still be grappling with "who will pay" and "how much"?

Consumers are used to getting content such as cable access subsidized in part by advertising spending. And so far, I think the internet advertising model has been a bust.

I mean, look how simple it is to disable those annoying popup ads.

I think there has to be a killer app going forward to drive demand sufficient for consumers to pay the necessary fees to make broadband delivery to the home profitable.

For me that would be music and video. Lot's of thorny legal issues to contend with there WRT piracy. Until then, it "feels" like we're biding our time.
