That's a good start, but what is/will be the compelling desktop application to get desktop users interested in Linux over a MSFT OS and application combo?

I have no doubts Linux is a great OS, able to leap tall buildings, etc. the server admins and engineers are already on board. I have grave doubts about the desktop users.

Yes, that's why cheap generics long ago banished higher-priced brands at the local supermarket, and why nobody would think of paying more for a "label" in clothing today, right?

I've no doubt your views reflect the common perception of Linux advocates but they have nothing to do with the realities of marketing in the consumer space. The consumer space is pretty much the same, whether it is for operating systems or soap suds. Generic products have always existed in any consumer category but they represent little threat to leading brands because in the consumer space marketing is everything.

On the desktop Linux remains a hobbyist market. What is going to change that? "Cheap" isn't the answer.
