The idea of preventing the spread of communism to South Vietnam was not the "mistake" of that conflict. The failure to destroy the enemy was. It should have been a twenty-minute war, with no one left to surrender. The third world's flirtation with the Soviets (including India and the Arab states), which extended the Cold War into a world conflict, would have been stopped cold by the reality that that would never be tolerated...
